When a Child Custody Battle Turns into a Missing Person Search

When a Child Custody Battle Turns into a Missing Person Search

As investigators with years of experience, everyone at International Investigators knows how emotionally-charged many situations can be, especially those involving family – like death, estates and divorce. When we pick up a call from a divorce attorney and we get the news that something bad has happened, we approach it from an objective viewpoint, which the parties involved aren’t usually able to do.

This is especially true when the line between a divorce investigation blurs into a missing person search. Child custody is often a battleground and when one spouse, or side of the family, removes the child from the area and hides elsewhere, finding people who have any knowledge is a priority.

Find Missing Person – Yes, sir! International Investigators is good at that!

Find Missing Person – Yes, sir! International Investigators is good at that!

Most of us have heard about families in which one relative, for whatever reason, becomes estranged from everyone else. Maybe it’s been 20 years or more since anyone knew the whereabouts of Uncle Joe, who left home after a bitter argument with his dad. Maybe a pregnant, unmarried cousin was pressured to give up her unborn child for adoption so she leaves the family and never reappears.

Whatever the reason might be for the empty chairs at annual family reunions and holiday dinners, finding those people suddenly becomes important when lost relatives are named to inherit from a deceased family member’s estate. It’s not unusual at all for everyone to blink and shrug and admit they have absolutely no idea how to locate people who [...]

Missing Persons Case Ends in a Bit of a Surprise

We are used to being the last resort. It kind of comes with the missing persons investigations territory. It doesn't apply to all cases where we are asked to find a missing person, but many.

International Investigators was hired by an insurance company to try to locate a missing person who was the heir to the estate of a man who died at the age of 85. He had never married and had had one sibling – a sister – and an older sister at that. Both his parents were long deceased and there was no record of his having any contact with his sister for over 40 years.

The last information provided to the missing persons investigator was that she had moved to California – [...]

Missing man’s story has happy ending

International Investigators has had some cases that have taken some interesting turns, that’s for sure.

We were contacted by a family for help in finding a missing person - their son. He was in his mid-twenties and had taken his wife of two years to South America for vacation. She retuned alone saying he had disappeared and she had no idea where he was. The parents made some inquiries, but were unable to locate any trace of him. It appeared, just like the wife said, that he had simply vanished.

Figuring out that finding a missing person is not an easy task, especially outside the country, they turned to International Investigators. It didn’t take too long before our missing person investigator found him - in a [...]

Medical Issues are One Reason we Find Missing Relatives

Not all investigative work is tied to bad guys.

In fact, here at International Investigators, we get many calls from people asking us to find a family member. We find missing siblings and parents. In fact, we find missing relatives of all sorts.

Some have been estranged for years and old hurts are fading. Other cases are from people seeking family members because of medical issues. It could be that a genetic disease has been uncovered and the patient/client wants to let the missing relative know of health issues they should suspect may happen in their lives.

Another side of medical-related investigations into missing persons that come up is when a patient is seeking an organ donor or a bone marrow donor.

In one case, a woman called [...]

Trash Talks in Family and Domestic Law Cases

Garbology is a term we coined some time ago. The technique can be a very effective tool in the private investigator's box and used for a variety of purposes:

Marital Infidelity. Often we are contacted by an attorney with a client who suspects their spouse is having extramarital affairs. Cheating spouse surveillance often uncovers meet-ups. From those we find and look up a license plate number to identify the third party.

Child Custody. When proof is needed to support claims that one parent should not have custody, garbology can provide a great deal of information. In fact, should the trash reveal evidence of drugs - such as meth lab materials, paraphernalia; like needles, pipes, packages or actual drugs- the results are turned over to narcotics authorities.
